Gorlice has been founded in 1355 and counts 28.000 inhabitants today. The city is located 140 km southeast from Krakow and 30 km north of the Slovakian border.

The city lies in the Ropa and Sękówka River Valleys, surrounded by several mountain ranges of the Carpathian Mountains, namely their part called Beskid Niski (Low Beskid) massive. It is located in the heartland of the Doły (Pits), and its average elevation above sea level is 340 metres.
